Description

The report summarises An archaeological desk-based assessment has been prepared by Uni-versity of Leicester Archaeological Services for Mr John Breedon for land at Cliff Hill Lane, Aslockton, Nottinghamshire (SK 744 406). This document has been prepared in advance of the proposed development of the site, which is currently a large, flat arable field that lies to the north of the village. The land here was enclosed in 1781 and comprised of three separate enclosures. Since that time the hedgelines have been changed and lost and now the land is a single field with an old broken hedgerow close to the south-west corner of the field. The site lies in an area that is very rich in archaeological remains. A large complex of enclosures, boundary ditches and possible buildings have been identified by aerial photography and cropmark analysis and have been plotted onto the National Mapping Programme by English Heritage. The cropmarks are largely undated, but their form suggests a settlement dated to the Iron Age and Roman periods. Intrusive archaeological work in the area has produced dating evidence to confirm the putative dates. Further artefacts discovered close to the site have shown that there is also the potential for earlier remains here from the Palaeolithic period through to the Bronze Age. There is also a possible Anglo-Saxon cemetery close by which may suggest that settlement activity continued into the post-Roman period and beyond. There is therefore a very high potential for archaeological remains to be revealed during any new development on the site, particularly remains dating from the Iron Age and Roman periods. There is less potential for remains from medieval and post-medieval period Documentary sources such as NCC HER, Geological maps, NMP and other historical material were consulted and inform this report. A map regression exercise took place and the site was visited - the report contains photos taken during the site visit.
