Description

AOC group was commissioned by AECOM to undertake a gradiometer survey to establish the potential for buried archaeological remains prior to the proposed quarry extensions close to the village of Kirton. A total of 18 hectares were surveyed. The survey was carried out using Bartington Grad 601-2fluxgate gradiometer. Data was collected onan east-west alignment using zig zag traverses with a sample interval of 0.25m and a traverse of interval of 1m. 262 30 x 30m squares were surveyed. Discrete pits and tentative trends which could be related to either archaeological or modern farming activities were revealed, their origins remain unclear. Former field boundaries and a modern service has been identified in the north east of the site as well as several small areas of magnetic disturbance. The report contains a chronological archaeological assessment of the proposed development area, and details of the method used to carry out the survey and images of the gradiometer results. The report concludes that the survey did not identify any anomalies or features of a definitive archaeological nature.
