Description
A desk based archaeological assessment has been carried out by John Samuels Archaeological Consultants on land at Manor Farm, Egmanton, Nottinghamshire, the site is approximately 0.5 ha.
The northern part of the site is part of the medieval Gaddick Hill motte and bailey castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The report states that it is unlikely that the castle was unoccupied by the late thirteenth century or early fourteenth century and it is possible that a manor house was built in the bailey during the late medieval period then replaced by Egmanton Hall in the post medieval period.
At the time of the report the site was surfaced in buildings, concrete, rubble, broken stone, brick paving and grass. The report contains a site, a map regression exercise, details of a site visit and walkover survey and a detailed Archaeological and Historical Background and Assessment took place.
The report concludes that the proposed development will have a beneficial impact on the setting of the farm and monument.
