Description

The watching brief monitored the excavation of a pipeline trench and groundworks for a new treatment plant. The watching brief revealed a sequence of natural, undated, post-medieval and recent deposits. Undated remains include walls, with an associated foundation trench and dumped deposits, the report suggests this could have been a bridge which formerly crossed the Car Dyke water course. Finds retrieved during the investigation include 3 pottery sherds of 17th – 18th century date, along with post medieval to modern brick tile. Samples were also taken from a fishpond and monolith to detail the vegetation history of the surrounding area from glacial episodes to present. The results of the sample analysis indicate the presence of aquatic habitat, the presence of molluscs that are associated with running water habitats, the report suggests that the ponds may have been connected to sluices to the adjacent stream. The sample taken from the monolith contained a silty peat deposit above a more shelly organic silt. Parts of some samples were radio carbon dated, the report contains the results. The report contains a detailed chronological analysis of the results. The report contains a site map, a lay out of the planned pipeline, section drawings, list of finds, a list of contexts numbers with descriptions of the trenches and photos taken during the watching brief. The report also contains the results of from the samples taken from the site. Finds CBM – x2 – drain and post medieval handmade brick. Finds x 3 – Red painted black glazed earthenware, Nottingham brown stoneware, bottle/flagon 18th Century. Midlands Yellow ware, late 17th century.
