Description
The watching brief took place as part of the planning condition for an extension to the rear of a cottage situated in the historic core of the village. This is identified as holding archaeological potential especially of Anglo Saxon / Roman origin.
The monitoring revealed a complex of archaeological features at the east end of the site, associated with a furnace of unknown function. Linear features thought to be contemporary with the structure were identified. Ceramics and a worked bone pin beater suggest that the activity was focused in the Saxo-Norman period.
The watching brief was carried out on a ground reduction of up to 1m across the area of the new extension.
Each linear feature was partially excavated and 3 pottery sherds dating to 10th – 11th century were recovered.
Report contains archaeological photographs.
Finds –
1 x Sherd Thetford type ware
2 x Lincoln type shelly ware
Both dating to 10th 11th century.
A soil sample from one to the ditches was taken and was found to contain low density of cereal grains, along with abundant coal and other burnt organic material.
The report contains a detailed pottery report, along with photos taken during the works.
