Description

This desk based assessment took place to assess the potential impact that a development of 41 semi-detached dwellings and garages would have on the land at Mark Lane, East Markham and its local environs and to establish if further archaeological investigation will be required. Prior to the development the land was occupied by a complex of former poultry processing factory buildings, the southern part of the site contained agricultural land and farm buildings. The land had previously been levelled out. Historic and archaeological data within 1km buffer zone of the site was examined. A field visit took place in order to establish if any archaeological features were visible on the surface as well as help establish the impact the development could have on the local historic environment. Photos from the visit are used in the report. A map regression exercise also took place and other documentary sources were also consulted (report contains further detail). A chronological history of the site is discussed. The report finds the overall archaeological potential of the site to be low. It finds the southern half of the site to be of low – moderate archaeological significance. Any archaeological remains which may exist to the depths of the proposed developments may be subject to adverse impacts as a result of the groundworks. The report states that “archaeological remains which would have existed to a depth of at least 1m will have been removed. The report suggests that beyond 1m depth there is potential that early prehistoric remains could be recovered, as there is no evidence of prehistoric activity in the surrounding area the potential for this is low. The southern part of the site has not been disturbed as much as the northern part and therefore the archaeological potential for this part is found to be low to moderate. “Any archaeological deposits which may lie within the site are likely to relate to Post-Medieval and Modern Periods and would be of local significance” G. Davis 2009 pg30
