Description

Five signage pits are variously located on the verges on both sides of the A46. The watching brief identified no features of archaeological significance. The predominant layers encontered were post-Victorian, and all pits contained some degree of modern disturbance by service trenches or road make-up/landscaping. It is suggested that a sandy silt layer present in all pits represents a "early buried topsoil, now leached of colour" though there is no dating evidence to suggest this. One artifact recovered: Victorian pottery sherd.
