Description

Samples were taken during the 1980s excavation at Site 5 in Holme Pierrepont. Sampling of the ring ditch for the recovery of charred plant remains was conducted. The charred remains were heavily impregnated with soluble iron salts which impeded the recovery by preventing the charred material from floating. Although the samples from this site yielded very little in the way of charred plant remains, it is not possible to determine how much this was due to a real scarcity of charred remains and how much to poor recovery. A total of 33 samples was taken. The flots from these samples were collected on 1mm and 250 micron mesh sieves. Six samples were processed using a York sieving machine with a 500 micron mesh sieve. The flots from tehse latter samples were dry sieved. Overall the results flotation sampling was not successful in achieving representative results due to the soluble iron salts.
