Description
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Carillion Civil Engineering to carry out a geophysical survey of land off the A1 to the northwest of Elkesley in Nottinghamshire. The survey forms part of an ongoing programme of archaeological works being undertaken ahead of proposed improvements to the road junction at the Site, which consist of the construction of new sections of carriageway and alterations to the existing road network. The aim of the geophysical survey was to establish the presence/absence, extent and character of detectable archaeological remains within the survey area. The survey areas are located to the northeast and southwest of the A1, to the northwest of Elkesley, occupying gently undulating farmland. The gradiometer survey covered 8.2ha and has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies of possible archaeological interest within the survey area, along with regions of increased magnetic response and a modern service. The majority of the anomalies of possible archaeological interest comprise pit-like anomalies of varying size. In places, these appear in clusters and it is thought that the larger examples are more likely to be of archaeological interest. However, the smaller pit-like responses could be the result of natural or agricultural processes. Several linear anomalies and a band of increased magnetic response are consistent with former field boundaries, and numerous linear ploughing trends are visible within the dataset, particularly within the southwestern field. Two segments of modern services have been identified within the data, although their alignments suggest that they relate to the same feature.
