Description
The site is located within the village of Sutton-cum-Lound, Nottinghamshire, approximately 4.5km northwest of Retford. The site is bounded to the north by Town Street, to the south and
west by residential development along Portland Place and to the east by open agricultural land. The site occupies an area of approximately 1.45 hectares.
The trenching strategy comprised eight trenches but due to Covid-19, one trench could not be completed.
The only feature of potential archaeological interest was recorded in Trench 8. This comprised a ditch, [804], that was aligned approximately west-northwest to east-southeast, 1.73m in width and 0.63m deep. The orientation of the ditch did not match any of the subdivisions of the fields known from historic mapping or the existing boundaries, which are thought to reflect medieval land divisions. Although no datable artefacts were recovered from the fill of the ditch, the level that it was cut from, the anomalous alignment to existing boundaries, and the character of the fill suggest that the feature may pre-date the medieval period. Ultimately, however, the ditch remains undated.
Overall, the archaeological potential of the site is low.
