Description

Parts of the priory were excavated in 1908 under the auspices of the Thoroton Society. Their campaign concentrated on the area of the church and the northern row of cells. A site plan was produced, but no indications was given of the size and extent of the trenches excavated. A collection of photographs in Nottingham City Library (X Beauvale H70 3105, 25948-52) shows the site under excavation. Wall lines were followed east of the present remains of the church to plan its former extent and an area cleared to the south to reveal a further range of buildings. It appears that most of the northern range of cells lying west of the church were cleared and the remains at least exposed in plan. Work seems to have concentrated on the central cell, cell 3. (2)
