Description

The site lies on the east side of the village, on the north side of Butt Lane which approaches from the old A46 Fosse Way. To the west is the modern residential Holloway Close and Bridle Ways; the northern edge of the site is defined by Closes Side Lane, and the east is a field boundary, beyond which are further arable fields. The site itself comprises of a little under 4 hectares of arable farmland, divided into 4 fields of varying size, and with several modern farm buildings in the northeast corner of the site, adjacent to Closes Side Lane. Four trenches were opened by machine using a toothless ditching bucket, measuring 25m by 2m. Two of these trenches targeted the possible palaeochannel in one area, with single trenches being placed in two other areas. The evaluation revealed a very low level of archaeology. The two trenches in two areas were deemed negative, yielding no positive results whatsoever. The geophysical anomaly in one, targeted by two trenches, was not a palaeochannel. The strong magnetic response may in fact have been induced by denser natural materials forming an outcrop which contained fragments of ferrous stone which was evident throughout the two trenches. One trench did reveal an undated ditch on the same alignment as the former field boundary identified by geophysics and located within another trench. This ditch may be associated or contemporary with the field boundary, being cut at a high level into the underlying subsoil so presumably of early modern date? It is concluded that further archaeological intervention is unlikely to produce any significant results.
