Description

The site comprises c. 1.4ha within a single area situated to the northwest of Worksop. The site is situated to the south and west of Gateford Road in a single area of land consisting of pasture. It is bounded to the south by Gateford Toll Bar and to the north and east by the A57. The site is relatively flat and lies at approximately 55m aOD across its entirety. The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid. The geophysical survey has detected a former field boundary, likely to be 19th century in date which has been corroborated by Ordnance Survey mapping. Magnetic disturbance around the periphery of the fields which is associated with modern housing, metal fencing, and the nearby roads has also been detected. Geological anomalies have been recorded throughout due to variations within the soils. Overall the archaeological potential of the Site is considered to be low. The former field boundary has been detected bisecting the site which is first recorded on Ordnance Survey mapping dating from 1888 (NLS 2022). The boundary remains marked on OS mapping up to 1971 but is no longer present by 2002, suggesting removal of the boundary within the last quarter of the 20th century.
