The Site comprises c. 6.8ha on arable land, on the southern outskirts of Sutton Bonington, approximately 5km northwest of Loughborough, Nottinghamshire. The survey area is bounded to the northwest by housing associated with Chanwood Fields, to the northeast by a railway line, to the southeast by the A6006 and to the southwest by Park Lane. The Ordnance Datum (aOD) lies between 43m aOD in the northeast and 36m aOD in the south. The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid. Anomalies of a possible archaeological origin have been recorded within the dataset in the form of linear trends and pit-like responses. The anomalies are on a northwest to southeast alignment and have clearly been truncated by the ploughing trends. Whilst an archaeological origin is preferred, given the cropmark evidence to the south, the responses may also be related to magnetic soils that have been brought to the surface by the plough. The geophysical survey has detected magnetic anomalies which may be of some archaeological interest and cropmark evidence to the south of the survey area, may add some weight to the ‘possible archaeology’ interpretation. Agricultural trends can be seen throughout, reflecting the modern ploughing regime. Magnetic disturbance seen along the limits of the survey area are due to metal fencing, roads and a railway line. Based on the interpretation of the geophysical survey the archaeological potential of this site is deemed to be moderate to low.
