Description
The proposed development site encompasses the western side of a large arable field, recently been sown with maize. It is bordered to the west by residential developments, to the north by sewage works and to the south by a school/ playing field.
A Bartington 601 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer was calibrated to the mean magnetic value of the survey area. The zigzag traverse method was used, with readings taken at 0.25m intervals along 1.0m wide traverses.
The survey has recorded potential ditches and pits, predominately situated towards the southern part of the site. It is unclear whether more dispersed linear features in the northern region reflect traces of buried ditches or are associated with cultivation, although the latter seems likely.
Whilst at least one of the recorded anomalies in the southern part of the site may relate to a post-medieval farmstead, others could indicate a separate phase or phases of activity (including a possible association with earthworks and other remains that lie within 100m to the south).
Magnetic variation associated with current and recent features include probable relict NE-SW ridge and furrow cultivation, a buried service and a recently removed boundary.
