The c.150ha site is situated at former Thoresby Colliery, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. Survey of the southern part of the site was requested, comprising an area of approximately 18.5 ha of arable land (encompassing four fields) that lies to the north of Ollerton Road. A Bartington 601 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer was used. The zigzag traverse method was used, with readings being taken at 0.25m intervals along 1.0m wide traverses. The survey recorded a small number of linear anomalies that might indicate buried ditches. For the most part these were detected in the western part of the survey area. Linear trends in the mid-eastern part of the site are possibly of natural, rather than archaeological, origin. Whereas the majority of magnetically weak anomalies almost certainly reflect natural features, an archaeological origin of some (albeit unspecified) discrete anomalies as pits cannot be discounted. Greater concentrations of such responses were recorded towards the eastern end of the site might reflect of pockets of iron-rich mineral deposits in areas more prone to water logging. However, examples recorded in the western part of the site are considered more likely to be associated with anthropogenic activities, though the majority are probably associated with the former colliery. Slight traces of probable potential ridge and furrow were recorded in the mid south-western region. Widespread and magnetically stronger variation in the north-western part of the site indicates probable land fill. Stronger variation was also induced by buried services and modern boundaries.
