Description
The site is located immediately north of Station Road at the northwest end of the village.
The trial trenching methodology entailed the excavation of four trenches, each measuring 15m long by 1.8m wide.
The evaluation exposed archaeology in two of the four trenches. A ditch and possible ditch terminus were observed in one trench. A continuation of the latter ditch was observed in another trench. A small pottery assemblage was recovered from the features in one trench, providing a terminus post quem of the mid-14th to 15th century AD for the activity on the site indicating medieval age. The alignment of the ditches may reflect a continuation of a former boundary to the rear of properties fronting Station Road (formerly Wheatley Lane) as observed on the 1885 25-inch Ordnance Survey. No evidence was identified for further activity of archaeological significance and as such the proposed development is likely to have minimal impact on the archaeological resource.
