Description

The site lies 1.2km northwest of the centre of Mansfield. The total area of the site is 2.7ha, encompassing one field. The site is bounded by Broomhill Lane to the west and Mansfield Cricket Ground to the east. A magnetic gradiometry survey was carried out with a Bartington Grad 601-2 fluxgate magnetometer. The field was divided into 40m2 grids using a survey grade GPS and each grid was walked systematically in a zigzag pattern, taking readings every 0.25m in traverses 1m apart. The survey data shows the area has a high magnetic signal that is believed to be related to the former use of the site as allotments, as this would heavily disturb the ground and mean that ferrous debris would be present within the soil. This is likely to be exasperated by fly tipping, mowing and any levelling activities, which would have spread detritus across the field in subsequent years. The bipolar anomalies that have been identified are very likely to be of modern origin, relating to the former allotment paths. There are two positive anomalies that cannot be assigned a definitive origin, but two informal pathways are visible in the aerial image of the site which appear to coincide with the orientation of the anomalies and probably indicates the cause of these anomalies. The high levels of magnetic disturbance have the potential to mask the presence of any archaeological features, although it should be noted that at present there is not any evidence of archaeology on the site.
