Description

The Leat terminus is located within the Moor Pond Wood area of Papplewick, 4m immediately north of Papplewick Lane. The leat is visible on the surface, with a depth of approximately 0.7m from the top of the western bank to current ground level in the base of the feature. To the immediate west of the excavation the ground level decreases due to the steep leat bank sloping towards a narrow gully. The leat itself runs the length of, and parallel to, Moor Pond and continues south of Papplewick Lane for 60m, where it starts to curve towards the east before terminating. To the west of the leat, the ground level falls away into Moor Pond. The trench was hand excavated. The excavation area originally measured 3.8m x 2.5m, on a north to south orientation, and was extended over a period of time to a total of 15 x 4m. Excavations revealed the gentle sloping base of the leat, a sluice structure cutting into the leat banks, alignments of nails and bolts, and a substantial bank of clay. The features seemed to represent a series of alterations to the water system related to the implementation of a 42ft diameter waterwheel at New Mill further downstream. The complexity of the Papplewick Lane Leat site required a large degree of hypothetical reconstruction in order to ascertain a coherent sequence of events for this particular part of the Robinsons water system. It is clear that there were a number of alterations that are almost archaeologically invisible due to their short-lived nature, but these constant changes do show that successive revisions of the system were required in order to ensure it worked efficiently.
