Description

Two auger borehole transects were undertaken at Moor Pond Wood. The hand auger transect over the former leat course in the first transect indicated the possibility that the base of the channel may have been at c. 71.90m OD (1.10m BGL) where the mudstone bedrock was encountered. The small ditch to the west does not appear to have been utilised for reasons similar to the known leat course, although this possibility cannot be discounted as the mudstone bedrock could not be reached. The second transect revealed little else in the way of features to the south-west of the slope. The probing of the shallow ditch to 0.75m BGL revealed mudstone bedrock at 66.41m OD (0.70m BGL) overlain by reddish brown friable silty-clayed sand, with some water content. The outcome of the augering here is that it is not possible to state whether this represents another former leat channel or if this a drainage ditch. The substantial accumulations / deposits of sand with gravel, forming the slight bank may indicate deliberate deposition, but without being able to prove the mudstone depth / elevation in the transect it is difficult to state definitively whether this is the case or not.
