Description

The survey included all monuments in the churchyard and in the church. It was completed in three parts; firstly a digital map of the locations of memorials was created, secondly a full gravestone recording and condition survey of the memorials in the churchyard was undertaken, thirdly a full photographic record was made of all the memorials in the churchyard. Mapping of features: Each monument, including memorial plaques, grave markers and single urns was given a unique number prior to surveying. The survey was carried out using a Leica Flexline TS06 TotalStation. Monument survey: The second phase of the project was to conduct a survey of the monuments in the graveyard, using a standard form to record the inscription, construction materials, decoration, size and condition. Photography: The photographic record was undertaken by the group who produced a photo album. In total, 474 monuments were recorded at All Saints. 452 were located in the churchyard and 22 inside the church. Of those in the churchyard, one is a decorative plaque and one is the war memorial. This leaves 450 which record memorials to 600 people in total. This number represents those people that appear on legible, extant stones at the time of the survey and will not fully represent the total number of burials at All Saints church. Graffiti has been recorded as it gives an insight into the behaviour of those using the church. There are sketches on woodwork in the vestry which have been drawn by Derek Kirton who was a bell ringer at the church for 50 years.
