Description

The proposed development site is situated on land off the northern frontage of Crab Lane and on the southern outskirts of the village of North Muskham. The archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken at the development site on the 9th-10th of March 2020. This comprised the continual archaeological monitoring and recording of the mechanical excavation of the foundations for the two new bungalows. These mechanical excavations were carried out by a 5-ton 360° excavator that was fitted with a 0.70m wide toothed bucket. No archaeological activity was identified on this site and there were no finds. The findings comprised a site deposit sequence that consisted of a topsoil horizon, an undated buried soil or ploughsoil horizon and underlying natural horizon, which consisted partially of river terrace gravels to the east with the remainder of alluvial silt deposits to the west. This deposit sequence was consistent over the whole monitored area and was recorded within nine representative sections, which were widely distributed over the development site. During the course of the excavation of a northerly east-west orientated foundation trench within the new build area of one of the units, part of the brick foundations of the 19th century and demolished former Old Stables were removed. This building comprised the former stable block to the Old Manor House or North Muskham House to the south.
