Description

The site comprises a farmhouse, outbuildings and associated paddock which are located to the south of Costock Road and near the centre of the village. The site is bounded by Costock Road to the north and by agricultural land to the south and is located only 40m south-west of Holy Trinity Church with the village beyond this to the north. It was proposed to dig four trenches, each 10m long by 1.8m-2m wide, equating to a c. 5% sample of the total developable site area (c. 1,240 sq m). The trenches were positioned on the basis of historical map evidence to target the location of the former southern range, and to also target areas affected by the development plan. Topsoil and any other overburden were to be removed by a machine fitted with a toothless ditching bucket, under constant archaeological supervision, to expose archaeologically sensitive levels. Where archaeological features were present, these were to be excavated or sampled by hand to an agreed sampling strategy, dependent on the nature and significance of the feature. In one trench, three different types of brick were present. In the lower rubble layer, directly above the cobbles, the bricks were largely handmade red bricks (un-frogged) measuring 238mm x 116mm x 62mm and suggestive of a Regency or Georgian date. The uppermost rubble layer was much more mixed and featured both blue-grey frogged bricks stamped “SHIPLEY” measuring 229mm x 106mm x 77mm, along with red frogged bricks stamped “BALDWIN” measuring 222mm x 108mm x 74mm and both likely to date from the 19th century. Ceramic and glass finds of broadly post-medieval date were present in both rubble layers Despite the potential for the site to contain remains of possible medieval date, relating to one of the manors of Wysall, the site comprised mostly made-ground of post-medieval date. These layers largely comprised brick, glass and ceramic material of 19th-20th century date, although one trench had the remains of a heavily disturbed cobbled surface which likely relates to an earlier yard surface in the central courtyard. A second trench showed evidence of the construction cut from the southern range which was demolished in the 1960s and both these trenches contained a small amount of worked stones which may relate to earlier outbuildings, although as hardcore this material could equally have been introduced from elsewhere. No other features or finds were observed and the archaeological potential is considered to be low.
