Description
The site comprises a roughly triangular area of agricultural land immediately to east of Fosse Way and to the west of the A46 at the northeast end of Farndon.
The geophysical survey consisted of a detailed gradiometer survey of the proposed development area, totalling approximately 2.03 hectares. The survey was undertaken in a series of 30m grids across the site. There were several small areas covered with stacked sugar beet in the proposed development area which proved impossible to survey.
The survey was carried out using a Bartington Grad601-2 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer with an on-board automatic DL601 data logger. This instrument is a highly stable magnetometer which utilises two vertically aligned fluxgates, one positioned 1m above the other. This arrangement is then duplicated and separated by a 1m cross bar.
Data collection was undertaken in a zigzag traverse pattern, using a sample interval of 0.25m and a traverse interval of 1m.
The survey has revealed very few features of archaeological potential. Across the majority of the site are former cultivation trends, very likely modern in nature. There are a few small amorphous positive features that could represent pits, soil-filled hollows or former ponds. The other features revealed related to small metal monitoring wells, modern metal poles and a lorry trailer used as an advertising sign.
The evidence from the geophysical survey has identified little of potential archaeological interest, and suggests a negligible archaeological potential for most periods. However, previous work on the A46 Newark to Widmerpool Improvement scheme has identified a significant Palaeolithic flint assemblage within the proposed development area, so further material of this date is likely to be encountered on the site.
