Description

Main Street is the A616 through the centre of the village, with Main Street Farm lying in the village core almost opposite the Church of St. Bartholomew. The area of the site is Given as 0.55 hectares, a former farmyard occupied with several barns and outbuildings and the farmhouse. The evaluation involved the investigation of four trenches arranged in available open space around the former farmyard. The planned trench positions were adjusted on site to avoid buried services and the carpark of the farm shop to the west of the farmyard. The trenches were initially machine stripped using an excavator fitted with a smooth blade, then manually cleaned and examined for archaeologically significant features and horizons according to the approved WSI. A small collection of early modern pottery and fragments of clay tobacco pipe were recovered but discarded. Post-medieval archaeological features were exposed in three of the four evaluation trenches at Main Street Farm. One trench in the centre-west of the site and situated over the main access route through the farm, was the only trench devoid of any buried features, suggesting this route was established when the farm was constructed, and thus preventing any activity here. The brick footing and flooring section in one trench correspond with a building shown on historic OS mapping, the former also with a scar on the outbuilding to the north of the trench. While the footings yielded no datable artefacts, this reliably dates them to the later 19th century and they relate to buildings demolished in the later 20th century.
