Description
The proposed development area is located to the west of Tiln Farm, 1.5km north of Retford Nottinghamshire. The PDA consisted of three enclosed arable fields containing a grass crop at the time of the evaluation.
An evaluation totalling 7,650m2 was to be investigated by 85 trenches, each measuring 50m x 1.8m. The trenches were located within the site to target geophysical anomalies
identified during previous geophysical survey of the site. During the evaluation, three trenches were unable to be excavated due to flooding and excessive water levels. Subsequently, a total of 82 trenches were excavated during the course of the project. The excavation of the trenches was carried out using a 360 tracked excavator equipped with a smooth-bladed ditching bucket. All trenches were machine excavated to the top of the undisturbed natural strata or to the first significant archaeological horizon, whichever was encountered first.
The trenching carried out during the first phase of archaeological evaluation at Tiln Farm revealed a small area of prehistoric archaeology, dated from the recovery of pottery sherds within the fill of a ditch, focused on one trench in particular. The pottery recovered from the ditch dates to the Middle Iron Age with a date range 0f c.350BC to c.50BC.
Previous excavations to the north of the site (TPAT 2003), and excavations on the second phase of the Tiln Farm project, along with evidence from cropmarks and the geophysical survey of the site suggest a series of Romano-British settlements are present across the area and the features excavated in this evaluation within the southern area of trenching could represent an earlier continuation of these settlements.
Generally, the evaluation area was characterised by post-medieval field boundaries and the remains of ridge and furrow.
