Description
A historic environment desk-based assessment was undertaken to assess the impact that a proposed residential development would have on the historic environment.
The proposed development site was historically arable land, which was divided into seven fields, identified on the Parish of Mansfield Woodhouse tithe map of 1845. These field boundaries were altered during the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. A possible building was identified on historic mapping from 1880, which was expanded during the 20th century, and removed between 1955 and 1966.
Baseline conditions show that the 1km Study Area contains one scheduled monument and one grade II listed building. Beeston Lodge which is of high (national) significance and Warren Farmhouse which is of moderate (regional) heritage significance. There will be no impact to the setting of the grade II listed building. There will be no impact to the scheduled monument due to the distance from the proposed development site and vegetation screening.
There are seventeen non-designated heritage assets within the Study Area from the Prehistoric to Modern periods are of at most low (local) heritage significance. There may be a direct effect on one of these assets, comprising an unidentified building shown on historic mapping from 1884 and there will be no impact to the water meadows located immediately south of the proposed development site. There are three extant historic hedgerows which comprise the northern, western, and eastern boundary of the proposed development site. These hedgerows are depicted on the Parish of Mansfield Tithe Map 1845 and are considered to be important hedgerows, in accordance with the Hedgerow Regulations 1997.
It is assessed that there is up to moderate potential for unknown heritage assets with archaeological interest to be present within the proposed development site. A geophysical survey recorded anomalies which were of agricultural, natural and undetermined origins.
