Description
A historic environment desk-based assessment was undertaken to inform a planning application for construction of a car park on land at Queen’s Court, Queen Street, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, equating to approximately 0.17ha in extent.
It draws together the available archaeological, historical, topographic and land-use information in order to clarify the heritage significance and archaeological potential of the study site.
The Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Records have been consulted for all records within 500m of the study site.
Online repositories were consulted for historical maps, plans and relevant documentary sources, including published and unpublished documentary sources, in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the CIfA (2020).
A site visit was undertaken on the 28h May 2025 in dry, bright conditions to provide an assessment of the character of the site and appraise the potential impact of the proposed development on any heritage assets.
The assessment has established that there a single designated heritage asset would be directly impacted by the proposed scheme: Worksop Conservation Area. The study site is considered to be a largely neutral element within the Conservation Area with the only positive features being ‘Significant’ trees identified in the Conservation Area appraisal which will be retained as part of development proposals. The proposed development is, therefore, considered to present no harm to the significance, or character and appearance, of the Conservation Area.
Assessment of the available archaeological records, combined with analysis of historical mapping and the results of previous archaeological investigations in the search area, show that the study site has a moderate potential for archaeological evidence dating from the medieval periods relating to the Heb Ditch to be present, some slight potential for medieval backplot activity in the southern part of the study site and a low potential for the remainder of the study site. The nature of the development, however, comprises minimal ground disturbance and it is highly unlikely that any impact to archaeological remains will occur.
