Description
A desk-based study was conducted in respect of a proposal for the construction of a Green Waste Compositing Facility on land at Inkersall Grange, Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire.
The site comprises a roughly rectangular parcel of agricultural land approximately six hectares in size. It is bounded to the west and east by established hedges with open fields beyond, while the northern boundary is defined by a narrow strip of waste land facing onto agricultural buildings and the boundary to the south is currently without any demarcation.
Although there is no recorded information suggesting that settlement or other activity has occurred at this location during antiquity, a number of undated cropmarks have been identified within the surrounding area.
The archaeological potential of the site is modest. There are several enclosure cropmarks of prehistoric and/or Romano-British date which attest to a concentration of settlement and activity in the vicinity of Inkersall Grange Farm. Although there is no existing information to suggest that any of these cropmarks extend into the application area itself, external or peripheral activity associated with these features may be present within the area.
