Description
The site is located 915m northeast of Langley Mill and 1.678km northwest of Eastwood. The PDA is bounded immediately to the northeast by the A610 and to the west by the River Erewash. The area for development extends over an area of c.1.16 ha and comprises of land that is covered in scrub and is located on the border between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The land was previously a part of the GNR Nottingham and Erewash Valley Line over a mineral railway. In the south of the site the remains of the Cromford Canal north of its former junction with the Erewash Canal at Langley Mill Basin.
The watching brief area involved the re-excavation and restoration of this part of the original canal. This part included the location of Marshall’s Lock (lock number 13) and part of the western side of the canal to the north of this, the remains of which are infilled and buried. It was proposed to expose the walls of Marshall’s Lock and to include them as part of the scheme design, and this public benefit it was thought would help to off-set the loss of surviving buried elements of the canal elsewhere. These remains would have archaeological interest due to the information that they could provide regarding the construction, use and abandonment of this feature.
During the watching brief an area c. 112m long by up to 10m wide was excavated, but the sides were battered at a c. 45°angle which meant that only a 4-5m width was exposed along the watching brief area (flood compensation basin) base. The watching brief area revealed no archaeological features apart from a former lock, Marshall’s Lock, which is recorded on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map.
