Description

Archaeological watching briefs were carried out on the construction of a porch and the excavation of a cable trench adjacent to the Gilstrap Library building within the castle grounds. The construction of the porch involved the digging out of a 3.5m by 2.5m area to a depth of 0.45m below the ground surface, and the insertion of four piles, on the north-west side of the library. The cable laying involved the digging of a trench 0.3m wide and 0.4m – 0.5m deep, from the south corner of the building to the wall bounding the castle grounds on the Castle Gate street frontage. No archaeological deposits were disturbed during the course of the excavations. (1) GR given is for the Gilstrap building.
