Description

In the early part of the year (April-June 1997) three flights were undertaken. Two concentrated on requested industrial sites in SW Cumbria and an MOD Disposal site in Northumberland. The only cropmark flight identified some marks in winter barley, but these were often heavily lodged; wheat was generally still green but with evidence of height differences. The wettest June this century severely restricted flying. In the period from July to September, cropmark development was poor in all areas, it was those with the highest Soil Moisture Deficits which were targetted. Fifteen flights were undertaken. Sites recorded included Scheduled Monuments for English Heritage, MOD Disposals and requested Derbyshire sites. In the period from October to December, poor weather conditions severely restricted flying. Three flights were undertaken, recording further RSM sites for English Heritage, earthwork sites on the Yorkshire Wolds, the North York Moors and in Teesside, further MOD Disposals, the Wilton chemical works and steel works on Teeside. Possibilities for reconnaissance in the months January to March were again restricted by poor weather conditions, also a waterlogged airfield. Seven flights were undertaken covering the North Pennines to Hadrian's Wall, parts of the central and southern Yorkshire and Lancashire Pennines, the remaining Derwent Valley Mills and Derby railworks, Bull Sands and Haile Sands forts in the Humber estuary, buildings in Lancaster and Morecambe, and germination marks on the limestone in North, West and South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. To summarise, for the financial year 1997/8, 28 flights were undertaken (a total of 81.2 flight hours) and 730 targets were photographed, including over 200 RSMs.
