Summary

A World War Two type 22 pillbox at the former Hucknall Airfield. The hexagonal pillbox was probably built between 1940 and 1941. It was constructed from concrete using brick shuttering and features a long low entrance porch and embrasures on four sides. There is an internal ricochet wall.

Full Description

Hexagonal, brick shuttered pillbox. There is a long low entrance porch, embrasures on four sides and a 6in square hole in the sixth side. The walls are 3ft 6in thick. Internally there is a T-shaped anti-ricochet wall. (1)

A World War Two type 22 pillbox noted on the Defence of Britain Database as being located at "Hucknall Aerodrome", Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, TG 526 470. It formed part of the defences of the World War Two RAF station. According to the Defence of Britain record, the hexagonal pillbox was built between 1940 and 1941. It was constructed from concrete using brick shuttering and features a long low entrance porch and embrasures on four sides. There is an internal ricochet wall. It was noted as being extant and in fair condition after a field visit made in 1998. A later note records that in 2001 there was a propsal to convert the pillbox into a bat sanctuary.
