Full Description
Area 1 was located in the northern part of the castle and comprises the area directly beneath the gatehouse. Excavation to a depth of 100mm across the entire area and archaeological features were located throughout the area. The earliest deposit had been cut by a linear foundation trench (aligned northwest to southeast) for an early medieval phase of defences. A fragment of stonework constructed in herringbone style was located on the south-eastern side of Area 1. This stonework was interpreted as the base of a medieval wall, 500mm wide and partly overlay the earlier foundation trench. Sometime after its demolition . the southern half of Area 1 was levelled and a flagstone surface was constructed. This formed a high quality surface and was probably contemporary with, or later than the C12th gatehouse. The gatehouse was consolidated during the C19th and the base of the northern gatehouse was partially rebuilt. (1)
