Full Description
Large quantities of RB pot sherds were found in the weathered spoil of a [modern drainage] ditch that had been cleaned and deepened the previous year. Samian [from] the dig is late C2 but a surface find is late C1. Also found were the bones of domestic animals. Plans show 3 linear features, a N / S ditch 4'3" wide by 4'7" (max) below modern ploughsoil, another running W / E along the edge of excavation and a small NW / SE ditch or gully running into the N / S ditch. Sections show the RB layers sealed by 18" of alluvium under 9" of ploughsoil, the spread of pottery in the ploughsoil seemingly derives from the upcast from the ditch cleaning. Most of the finds donated to Retford Museum. (1) (2)
See L5774, L11204 for more finds, L5113 for linear feature, L5114 for enclosure, L11202, L11203 for other ditches.
