Full Description

Despite the well-preserved Med earthworks to be seen on Hall Close, the topsoiling in this area revealed little of any note. The N section of the route is much disturbed by the 1967 pipe (on the same line), but areas of close-set stone were observed to either side. Selected areas were cleaned - the stone scatters in 12 and 16 yielded medieval pottery and may have been some kind of stone surfacing. Cut 14 revealed a narrow (c.0.2m wide) linear band of stone, which may represent remains of a narrow wall. Cuts 10 and 13 contained much greater concentrations of stone. That in 13 was c.3.5m wide, fairly closely packed and slightly cambered, running NE - SW. Medieval pottery was found just above the surface of the stones. Cut 10 proved to be a ditch 0.36m deep and 5m wide, which may have been a channel connected with the medieval ponds to the W. Finds from within the fill were almost exclusively medieval. (1)
See M8308 for ponds, L11370 for nearby medieval pottery, M2953 for shrunken village.
