Full Description

Area 3 (N end of Trench B), under the road and pavements. Wooden pilings. Oak tree trunks up to 30cm in diameter, or in one case 20cm square. The piles largely rotted before layer 103 (containing C14 pottery - see L11801) first formed. These pilings may have represented mill workings and river management, or they may represent early attempts to protect the bridge or the ford. Trench B veers away from the river at this point, and therefore may have cut diagonally through river facings. Dendro analysis - The measured ring sequences did not crossmatch, sample 3 was dated to AD 947 - 1030, but no conclusive results were produced for sample 2. (1)
See L11801 for nearby Med finds, L11803 for piles found in dredging.
See M6076 for watermill, M17943 for bridge.
