Full Description

The most southerly feature revealed was a rectangular pit. A cluster of pot sherds and charcoal evident at top of this 2 x 1.2m feature, 0.24m deep. 15 sherds of early - mid Saxon pottery representing no more than 4 vessels from the upper fill, containing charcoal, burnt sand and heat affected pebbles. The lower fill also contained charcoal but no artefacts. The feature has been interpreted as a pit containing a hearth for cooking purposes. The pottery was not badly abraded, and this feature probably is of C6 date. One of the vessels is from the Charnwood Forest area. (1)
See L11928 for BA pit, L11925 for RB finds, L11926 for flint. See M18373 for E Med cemetery to south.
