Full Description

A number of features were observed in the trenching for mains replacement. 6 - A brick culvert crossing Tuxford Road, two mortared courses of grey mudstone lumps formed the virtually flat base, 1.45m below the modern road. Two mid-late C17 pot sherds were recovered from the backfill, which was sealed by gravel of a P Med road surface. The gravel overlay a crushed red brick rubble which had been cut through when the culvert was constructed; this was probably an earlier road surface of perhaps C17 date. 9 - Beside the junction with Mill Lane, a layer of pebbles in a black loam matrix, may be metalling for a medieval road surface. 10 - A second brick culvert beneath Eastgate, similar to (the other) but in poorer condition. A spoon bowl and fragment of P Med window glass were recovered. The seven pottery sherds were all of late C17 - early C18 date. One had glaze covering an early break and may have been a waster. 11 - Pebble metalling (probably P Med), possibly extended over backfilled ruts at the junction. 12 - To the E of the junction, a sherd of C18 pottery in dark soil beneath a brick layer.
