Full Description

One of the evaluation trenches contained a stone lined drain orientated E - W which was respected and left undisturbed by the sand pit. A further stone drain orientated N - S was exposed in an adjacent trench. Both were competently built comprising a stone base, side walls and stone capping. No dating evidence was recovered from either drain. A trench along the S boundary contained a single linear feature with pitched limestones which may have acted as a drain. Artefacts recovered from its fill included two sherds of Nottingham green glazed pottery, a fragment of a wool ?scarf, a small sheet of man-made polymer and a sherd of Nottingham stone ware. The finds are not considered to be reliable indicators of the feature's date. (1)
A continuation of the N-S stone built drain was encountered. C17 date tentatively attributed to the drains, all the structures with which they were associated have gone. (2)
See L12221 for sand pits from evaluation, L12277 for pits from watching brief. See also M6100 for infirmary, M5159 for priory church and cross references.
