Full Description

Two evaluation trenches contained large intrusions interpreted as borrow pits for sand extraction. They were both filled with re-deposited natural sands and topsoils containing frequent brick fragments and limestone. One appears to have been open for some time as its basal fill comprised an organic silt with preserved floral remains. C19 brick inclusions in the upper fill suggested it was open until relatively recently. (1)
See L12220 for drains, L12277 for further pits from watching brief.
