Full Description

A worked stone recovered from the spoil. The stone is a rectangular piece of medium coarse buff sandstone, measuring 155 x 135 x 85mm. One end has been broken off. Probably a building stone in origin. Its interest comes from the evidence for reuse. Virtually all the upper surface has been lost in a series of twelve grooves, heavily intercutting. The grooves indicate secondary use as an abrasive stone. The probability is that one end of a circular metal rod was being pushed along the stone to achieve a rounded or tapered end. The heavy use of the stone might suggest an industrial function. (1)
