Full Description

North Wheatley. Within the S verge near 'North Point' house, trench T9a encountered a thin band of 60mm pebbles and stone 0.9m below the ground surface, under a red clay deposit. This seems to be the N edge of the Roman road with the modern road just to the north. The gravel band was traced for about 150m and also recorded in trench T9b. No further trace of metalling was seen for the next 750m. Where the Chesterfield canal passes close to the road, the northern verge contained traces of the gravel road metalling 0.5m below the surface in T12. Existing road has now switched to the southern side of the Roman precursor. No further metalling was seen until Clayworth village. Further metalling was recorded in the intermittent trenches between Mill Lane and Clayworth Church. The gravel metalled road continued to be visible in the trench sides to the NW of the canal bridge. From the limited size of the monitored trenches it was not possible to be confident that the gravel metalling in Clayworth was that of a Roman road. (1)
See L12278 for further metalling NW from a different phase of work
