A. Oswald [contexts infers in 1938] examined a disused clay pit by Hathern station and discovered "at a depth of about 3 feet on the weathered south-west side of the pit near the railway", the remains
of two urns showing Saxon and Anglian features and the fragments of an iron knife found in a group together. Fragments of human bones were also noticed over a stretch of about 30 yards at a similar depth. The article contains a complete description of the pottery including dimensions, form, paste and decoration, together with a comment from J.L.W. Myers. "This cemetery forms yet another addition to the Soar valley group and so far as the evidence goes, and further exploration is much to
be desired, fits into the relatively early attribution of its neighbours." (1)
Inquiries at the office of "Hathernware Pottery" revealed that the clay pit is still disused and nothing else has been found - no features in face. (2)
Small scale excavation to clean face of brick pit in advance of filling by waste disposal carried out 1985 - no features found. (3)
The remains of the urns are preserved at Nottingham University (5)
