The church of St Helen dates to the Medieval period with elements of 13th-16th century building. It was restored in 1785 and again in 1878, the latter restoration was by T.G. Jackson. A memorial chapel was added in 1923. The present building is believed to be on the site of a pre-Conquest Saxon church noted in the Domesday Book. The church is built of coursed rubble, dressed stone and ashlar; the slate roofing is partly gabled and partly lean-to. Its plan comprises west tower (built in the 13th century and heightened in the 14th century), nave, north and south aisles, a chancel, vestries, a memorial chapel and a south porch. The Domesday Survey mentions a church in Stapleford (source: The Victoria history of the county of Nottingham: volume one ( 190) edited by Willia pg.270) . (5)
