Full Description

Stapleford Hall (1)
The Stapleford Mansion itself does not represent any distinct type of architecture. It has been in all probability added to and altered by successive owners. One portion ... is indicative of C16. The inner walls of this part of the house are almost unnecessarily substantial and the mullioned windows ... furnished still further evidence of the antiquity of the building. (2)
Stapleford Hall, now demolished, was ... rebuilt in 1797. (3)
Stapleford Hall has been lately rebuilt by Sir John Borlase Warren, Bart.; when I visited it [c.1790], it was in an unfinished state. (4)
The earliest mention of Stapleford Hall is in 1317 when Agnes de Stapleford acquired one third of the estate as dower. … Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren rebuilt the house in in 1797. … the stuccoed house contained a splendid suite of reception rooms, fifteen principal bedrooms and dressing rooms, thirteen servants bedrooms and numerous other domestic apartments. Parts of the original Hall, including mullioned windows, were incorporated into the west side of the new house. … The house stood close to the River Erewash on what is now known as Thorpe Close. … early in C20 the house became unoccupied and thereafter was gradually vandalised. It was demolished in August 1935 after being in a semi-ruinous state for many years. (5)
