Full Description
Lace and hosiery factory, 1880s, on Chilwell Road. Large 5 storey tall factory. Roof with skylights, back wing has lantern room. Hip roof, iron frame windows. Condition sound, occupied by Myfords Lathes Ltd. Many modern back extensions have been added along Wilmot Lane (05/06/1966). (1)
This factory's most prominent feature is the brick wall, pierced by 38 iron-framed windows abutting on to the back of the pavement. The exact date of the erection of the first factory is unknown but is believed to have been before 1880. This building had 10 standings (positions for lace machines) on each floor of its four storeys. The lantern runs the length of the building and is 30ft wide. The machines stood parallel to the Chilwell Road between two rows of flanged cast iron pillars and the upper floors are carried on 14in square oak beams. The second building, in which the machines stood at right angles to Chilwell Road, was built in 1886 according to the date on the gable end. Each floor contained five standings. A third building for lace machines was approved in October 1907 and is a single storey. The factory was built by the brothers William and Charles Neville and was a tenement factory. The last lace machine left the building a little before 1950. (2)
