Full Description
On 11/10/1978 a small collared urn was found at a depth of c 60cm, during the digging of a foundation trench for the central joist support at the front of a double garage being built at No 7 Grange Lea Gardens, Bramcote. The urn, which had been buried upside down but tilted to one side, was dug out with care, and survives intact. Fragments of a second urn, together with pieces of burnt human bone, were subsequently found in the immediate vicinity. Members of the Thoroton Society carried out a small excavation on 22 and 23/10/1978. By the time of the excavation the foundation trench had been filled with concrete. Beside it however a hole showed where fragments of the second urn and burnt bone had been found, and more fragments of both could still be seen in situ in a dark grey soil at the bottom of what had clearly been a burial pit. It was dug into a layer of hard compacted sand with charcoal, possibly an artifical deposit which could represent a barrow mound. (1)
