Full Description
Excavations in Aug and Sept 1978 revealed a Saxon fish weir at least 35m long built in 2 phases into the bed of an ancient course of the river 75m above the floor of the gravel pit. Of 2 phases, built with glacial erratic stone, stakes of holly and oak, and wattle hurdles. Samples of the wood have been RC dated to the C8 or C9 AD. The site has been landscaped into Colwick Country Park. (1)
Excavation revealed a double row of sharpened post that had originally been set upright but had collapsed. Between the posts and supportted by them were wattle hurdles. From its structure and position it seems most likely that this structure was one wing of a fish weir. (2)
