A homestead moat at Nanney's Plantation, Owthorpe. (1)
The moat is not in the Plantation but is the L-shaped fragment of ditch shown on the OS 6in. Mr Houldsworth cut a section through the NW arm in 1957. At a depth of 18in Med potsherds including green glazed ware, charcoal and sheep bones were found. The moat is almost certainly the site of the Med manor house preceding Owthorpe Hall (M883). (2) (3)
The feature shown on the OS 25in is an L-shaped length of dry ditch, in a rough pasture; with a small pond at the E end probably representing part of the moat. No trace of a continuation of the moat to the S was seen in the adjoining farmyard. The enclosed area is disturbed and uneven. No evidence of a former building was seen. Houldsworth's section was identified at SK 67003 33581. Nanny's Plantation lies on a moderately steep slope, making it a most unlikely site, and a cursory perambulation revealed nothing. (4)
Ditch, approx 1.5m deep, 10m wide with bank on outside. Right angle curve. Possibly a moat destroyed on S side. Banked enclosure and platform to SW. Ridge and furrow (E-W) to W. (5)
This could just as easily be a hollow way remnant of a back lane or a longer route, or part of a "village ring". (6)
